I got this hat as a backup after buying the Zephyr Skull Cap. At the time, Zephyr Skull caps were not available. Plus, there was a nice color selection on the Skimmer cap and I wasn't in love with the green on the Zephyr I had. I chose Olive Brown. It is a nice hat but there are a few things I would change: the stylish seams/logo would be a nice touch but the seam is not perfectly flat and smooth so it doesn't look quite like it was meant to. My head is about average in size. Maybe the problem is I have a little more hair than was intended, but the Skimmer is so skimpy that it just skims the tops of my ears. I can pull it down to cover about half of each ear but it slides back up. Pretty comfortable for a lot of temperatures but the Zephyr's fit is better for me and is what I prefer for wearing underneath my bike helmet and engaging in physical activity in cool/cold weather outdoors. My bald friend tried my Skimmer on and it was plenty big for him. I give it three Ibexes because while the wool material is great, the cut and the construction is only so-so. I would recommend it to bald or balding people but for most people would recommend the Zephyr instead.

I really like the weight of this hat (it's very lightweight and fits well under a helmet for commuting), but I've found that some of the seams will chafe my forehead when worn under a helmet. Also, the hat is quite short, so it doesn't cover my ears as much as desired. Otherwise, great hat for underneath a helmet!

Of course this hat is ridiculously comfortable and unsurpassed in weight-to-warmth ratio. The only reason I don't give it five stars is because it's not long enough to cover the bottom of my ears. Check that: It is, if I pull it all the way over my ears and leave my forehead exposed. And I may have a big head metaphorically, but not dimensionally, so it can't just be me.

All this being the case, I don't wear the hat for running when it's much below freezing. Pity, because it's superb for running. One of the best uses I've found for it is for running in cold rain, because my head stays relatively dry and warm and I don't get all martyrly about how horrible the weather is. It's also great for casual civilian use in non-tundra temps--doesn't give me hat head and easily goes in coat pocket when I don't need it.

This hat is great for everything from cycling, to skiing, to running to just hanging. I pretty much have one of these hats on all the time from Oct through May up here in VT. Very comfortable in all temps and all conditions.

I've used this hat as under helmet hat and I am very pleased. It helps keep the sweat out of my eyes and the sun off my head. I haven't used it in cold weather yet but I expect it to perform just as well as it has. Other uses I foresee will be as a camp hat while I'm doing some overnight bike camping.

I thought that the seams would be bulky, but the Skimmer is extremely comfortable, even under the bicycle helmet. Plenty warm enough, but folds up so small I am scared to lose it! So I will buy some more...
The tag is at 150 degrees to the rear, so I always put it on crooked... Almost Perfect!

I bought this hat to wear under my cycling helmet when commuting in the New England winter. Overall it performs admirably - fits under the helmet easily and insulates just enough to keep my scalp from freezing, without becoming overwarm or sweaty. It is also supremely comfortable.

The only downside is that my ears aren't completely covered. I use separate earwarmers if necessary, which actually compliment the hat and improve its useful temperature range quite nicely. Also, it should be noted that I have a large skull and my ears are rarely fully covered by skullcap-style hats.

I recommend the hat if you want the thinnest layer possible on your skull. It will not keep your head warm during a casual winter stroll, but will do nicely if you are working up a sweat and hate getting overheated by your gear.

Perfect for temperature regulation in any season--keeps me warm in winter, and protects my head from the sun in summer (without being too hot).
